Kings Bromley Lane, Armitage, Staffordshire
Almost concealed behind a curtain of ivy, the remains of a football dugout survive at the former home of Armitage Football Club. Inside, a wooden bench stands against the deteriorating blockwork, its view of the playing field largely obscured by vegetation. What was once a place of intense involvement in the game has become an unlikely refuge for nature.
Founded in 1915, Armitage FC enjoyed a long history in regional football. The club won the West Midlands (Regional) League First Division championship in 1973–74 and subsequently competed in its Premier Division. Financial difficulties led to a restructuring in 1990, when the club became Armitage '90. It later returned to its original name before folding in 1996. The ground at Kings Bromley Lane was left behind, its surviving structures gradually falling into disrepair.
A football dugout occupies a peculiar position in the game. Those seated there are participants rather than spectators, close enough to influence events but often powerless to change them. It is a place of anticipation, tactical decisions, frustration and occasional celebration. For generations of players and managers, countless moments of personal significance will have passed on benches just like this one. Today, the seat remains, but its occupants and their experiences have disappeared. The ivy has no knowledge of what happened here; it simply grows where people no longer gather.
