Former H. L. Myers Chemist, Pensnett, Dudley
Behind the frontage of a former pet shop in Pensnett, the identity of an earlier business has unexpectedly re-emerged. The weathered lettering of H. L. Myers, M.P.S. Chemist remains above the empty windows, while the boarded entrance and deteriorating paintwork reveal a building that has experienced several different lives. What was once concealed by a more recent shopfront is briefly visible again.
The chemist was a family business associated with Henry Louis Myers, a name shared by successive generations. In a published family recollection, a descendant describes how his grandparents and their children lived behind the shop, with the children attending the school opposite. He also recalls long-serving employees and surviving medicine bottles, tangible connections to a business that was once part of everyday life in Pensnett. The premises were more than a place of commerce: they were simultaneously a workplace, a family home and a familiar destination for local residents.
High streets are continually reinvented as businesses open, close and change ownership. New signs replace old ones, often concealing the histories of the buildings beneath them. Occasionally, the removal of a modern frontage exposes something that has survived unnoticed for decades. The reappearance of Myers Chemist offers a rare glimpse into that accumulated history. More significantly, it reminds us that behind every forgotten business name were people whose working lives, family relationships and daily routines were inseparable from the place itself.
